Boycott lists are all the rage these days. The goal is to give consumers a tool to directly affect bad actors within our society and force these businesses to change their ways or collapse. People all along the political spectrum boycott all manner of companies over inappropriate business practices to signal their displeasure. But there is one business type that should be on everyone’s boycott list, one economic practice that we should all work together to end… Slavery.
Slavery in its various forms has existed in most cultures throughout human history. The United States “ended” slavery but even in these modern times it thrives throughout the globe, even in the United States. Various business practices such as share cropping and the company store model kept people in bondage well after abolition. Publicly most such practices have ended, and yet, throughout our nation a variety of criminal industries and unscrupulous businesses still employ the old tactics.
Human trafficking, labor camps, sex slave trades, these are not just historical anecdotes; for some people, it is their reality. Even now there are those who believe that people are just products, that through economic or physical force they can compel other humans into servitude for their own benefit.
We, don’t think any human should be treated like a commodity, especially not in the “freest country in the world”. We believe that the majority of Americans agree. Prove us right by joining a boycott movement that we can all agree on – BoycottSlavery.band
Your purchase of a BoycottSlavery Band will help fund the organizations that work to defeat modery day slavery.
Slavery is a true global pandemic but it is one that can be addressed through public action. Traffickers require two things to stay in business, customers and “product”. We would like to take away both.
Removing the customers: It has long been established that criminals go where they can operate without stigma and governmental oversite. Therefore, communities that have high levels of citizen involvement through neighborhood watches, cleanups, family activities and various other initiatives are generally low crime areas because criminals see such places as hostile environments. Basically, when criminals are confronted with indications that the people around them will not accept their criminality, they go somewhere else.
So what if there was a way to advertise, everywhere you go, that you, and those with you, are against slavery, are willing to stand up to traffickers and serve as any ally and safe space for those seeking to escape from being trafficked?
Removing the “product”: Traffickers treat the human beings they have under their sway as product; as things. They keep them trapped in a variety of ways and work to ensure that they, the trafficker are the “product’s” only source of support. They keep their victims isolated and separated from resources that could help them escape. Since the traffickers maintain such control of their lives it is very hard for the victims to know what they can do to get free, who they can call or where they can go. When concerned citizens encounter people who are being trafficked the citizens also generally have no idea what the local resources are nor do they have any safe way to pass them on even if they did.
But what if there was a way for people to discretely pass information to victims in a fashion that was hard for their traffickers to detect and that gave the victims ready access, whenever they need it, to resources dedicated to helping them?

Currently in the United States the available Government resources are simply not up to the challenge. Help lines often lead to voicemails, there are less than 200 safe houses for people who have escaped trafficking and there is next to nothing in government programs to help those who do escape to integrate safely back into society. Often victims discover that escaping from their captors leaves them in the hands of underfunded government workers with insufficient resources. Many discover that their lives were better with their captors. This is unacceptable. It is time to stop relying on broken government systems to save these lives. It is time for those who care to step up, it is time to build a network of volunteers and charitable organizations dedicated to ending slavery and freeing its victims.
